Tamil Nadu Assembly proceedings will resume on Monday after a three-day break, with the House scheduled to meet at 9:30 am. Assembly Speaker J.C.D. Prabhakar has announced that there will be no Question Hour, while Chief Minister Vijay is expected to respond to opposition allegations concerning law and order in the state.
The Assembly had earlier witnessed a heated debate during discussions on the demands for grants for the Police and Fire and Rescue Services departments. Both departments are under Chief Minister Vijay.
Leader of the Opposition Udhayanidhi Stalin and AIADMK Legislature Party leader Edappadi K. Palaniswami criticised the government’s handling of law and order in the state.
The opposition alleged that crime and public safety conditions had remained a concern during the early period of the new government. Chief Minister Vijay had assured the House that he would give a detailed response to the allegations.
During the debate, Udhayanidhi Stalin claimed that Tamil Nadu had gone into “reverse gear” during the first 116 days of the new government.
He claimed that around 550 criminal incidents were reported during this period, including around 200 murders, more than 300 cases of sexual assault, eight police-related deaths and 10 suspected honour killings.
The figures were presented by the opposition in the Assembly to question the government’s law and order arrangements. Chief Minister Vijay is now set to respond to these allegations and other issues raised by the opposition.
During the Assembly debate, Chief Minister Vijay said he would provide a detailed response to every question raised by opposition members.
He had also urged DMK legislators to remain in the House instead of walking out and listen to his response.
Chief Minister Vijay’s response is expected to be a key part of Monday’s proceedings. The government is expected to provide details of measures related to policing and public safety in response to the opposition’s allegations on law and order.
The government will introduce an amendment Bill in the House on Monday. Other listed government business and discussions related to various departments will follow.
After the Chief Minister’s response, the Assembly will discuss demands for grants for several departments, including Forest, Commercial Taxes, Stamps and Registration, Environment and Climate Change.
The ministers concerned will respond to the debates on their respective departments and may announce new programmes and initiatives related to their portfolios.
The ongoing session of the Tamil Nadu Assembly has so far continued for 18 days. During this period, the House has discussed government expenditure, the performance of various departments and demands for grants.
The government and opposition have debated several issues in the Assembly. The law and order issue has been a particular focus because the Police and Fire and Rescue Services departments are under the Chief Minister.
The current session will continue with discussions on departmental demands for grants after the Chief Minister’s response. Ministers will also respond to the debates on their respective departments.
The Assembly is scheduled to reconvene at 9:30 am on Monday following the three-day break, with no Question Hour scheduled for the sitting.
