Lucknow’s air quality has improved in recent days amid continuous rainfall. The latest Air Quality Index report recorded the air in Lucknow and Indore among the cleanest in the country, while Lucknow had recorded a considerably high PM2.5 level before the monsoon.
Continuous rainfall has affected air quality in Lucknow, reducing dust and pollution particles present in the atmosphere and improving the city’s AQI. The latest report placed Lucknow among the Indian cities with better air quality.
Along with Lucknow, Indore was also recorded as having among the cleanest air. Indore has maintained its identity as one of the country’s cleanest cities for several years.
Lucknow’s air quality does not remain the same throughout the year. The AQI fluctuates depending on weather conditions and the time of year. During some periods, the city’s air remains in the moderate category, while during winter or periods of increased pollution, the AQI rises considerably.
Reports such as the Swachh Vayu Sarvekshan have also recorded changes in Lucknow’s ranking at different times. At the national level, cities such as Indore and Bhopal have continued to perform better in cleanliness and air-quality-related surveys.
A few months ago, the pollution situation in Lucknow was reported to be serious. A recent report by the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) and the Indian Institute of Toxicology Research (IITR) also mentioned pollution levels in the city.
During April and May, before the monsoon, Lucknow recorded a PM2.5 level of 73.8 micrograms per cubic metre. Air quality has now improved following monsoon rainfall.
