Emerging star of the Indian cricket team, Tilak Varma, has been appointed as the captain of the South Zone for the upcoming Duleep Trophy 2025. Having played four ODIs and 20 T20 matches at the international level so far, Tilak is currently in excellent form.

After consistently scoring runs in county cricket in England, Tilak has now been appointed as the captain of the South Zone for the Duleep Trophy 2025. This responsibility not only recognizes his batting prowess but also demonstrates his rapidly growing stature in Indian domestic cricket.

Impressive Performance in England, Now Commanding South Zone

The 21-year-old Tilak Varma recently played tremendous innings for the English county team Hampshire, scoring 100, 56, 47, and 112 in four innings. Following these brilliant performances, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has made him the captain of the South Zone squad for the Duleep Trophy. Tilak has so far played 4 ODIs and 20 T20 International matches for India, and he is currently considered the future of the Indian team led by Rohit Sharma. 

Considered close to Rohit, Tilak now has a golden opportunity to lead the team at the domestic level. This time, the zonal format is making a comeback in the Duleep Trophy. A total of six zonal teams will participate in this prestigious domestic tournament — North, South, West, East, Central, and North East. The four-day format tournament, starting on August 28, 2025, will be played at the BCCI's 'Center of Excellence' grounds. For the past few years, this tournament was played under the names of India A, B, C, and D teams, but now zonal teams have been selected through regional selectors.

There will be high expectations from the South Zone under the captaincy of Tilak Varma. His consistency in batting and leadership skills make him a mature player. This is both a new challenge and an opportunity for him in domestic cricket.
