The Trump administration has ordered a complete review of green card holders from 19 countries. Immigration rules have been tightened following an attack on two National Guard members in DC.
America: US President Donald Trump has ordered a full review of all green cards issued to individuals from 19 countries. The Trump administration has described this as a “matter of concern.” Immigration rules have been further tightened following a shooting incident involving two National Guard members in Washington, DC.
USCIS Announcement
Joseph Edlow, Director of U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS), stated that acting on President Trump's directive, he has ordered a “thorough, rigorous re-evaluation of every green card for every alien from every country of concern.” This announcement came just hours after an attack in which two National Guard members were injured.
New Scrutiny for Green Card Holders
Following the DC shooting, the Trump administration mandated a new level of scrutiny for green card holders from 19 countries. The federal government took this step after an increase in security risks. This new review will involve a comprehensive examination of all documents and background information of green card holders.
What Happened in the DC Shooting
Last Thursday, an Afghan national attacked two members of the West Virginia National Guard. In the incident, 20-year-old Specialist Sara Beckstrom was killed, and 24-year-old Staff Sergeant Andrew Wolfe was seriously injured. Both had been deployed to the capital as part of Trump's crime-fighting mission. Following this attack, security and immigration regulations were further tightened.

List of 19 Countries
USCIS stated that the new review will apply to green card holders from 19 countries whose citizens' entry had previously been fully or partially restricted. These countries include: Afghanistan, Burma, Chad, Republic of Congo, Equatorial Guinea, Eritrea, Haiti, Iran, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, Yemen, Burundi, Cuba, Laos, Sierra Leone, Togo, Turkmenistan, and Venezuela.
Reasons for the Review
According to USCIS, this measure has been taken in consideration of visa overstays, lack of cooperation in investigations, weak background check systems, and security concerns. Security concerns also include the threat of terrorism. The Trump administration asserts that this additional action is necessary to strengthen national security.
Officials' Response
USCIS Director Joe Edlow posted on X, stating that per the President's instructions, a full review of green card holders from every country of concern will be conducted. Officials stated that this new scrutiny would be thoroughly strict and comprehensive.
Situation for Indian Citizens
Currently, India is not included in this list of 19 countries. Therefore, this additional scrutiny does not apply to Indian green card holders at present. However, this move by the Trump administration is being viewed as a step towards tightening immigration processes globally.
