U.S. President Donald Trump said he had urged Israel’s leadership to support efforts to maintain a ceasefire with Hezbollah in Lebanon, following the implementation of a truce between the two sides. He described the ceasefire as a step toward stability in the Middle East.
According to media reports, Trump said he remained in contact with Israeli officials throughout the day and supported diplomatic efforts aimed at reducing tensions in the region. However, he did not clarify whether he had spoken directly with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
Commenting on his relationship with Netanyahu, Trump said their ties had always been positive. He stated, “My relationship with Bibi has always been positive. Many times, it is necessary to remain calm and make prudent decisions under difficult circumstances.”
The recent ceasefire between Israel and Hezbollah came after renewed attacks between the two sides had increased regional tensions.
According to various diplomatic sources, the ceasefire agreement was reached through mediation efforts involving the United States and Qatar. Some reports also indicated that Iran played a significant role in advancing the process. The ceasefire reportedly came into effect at 9 a.m. local time.
Israel has stated that it will continue to take necessary measures to protect its citizens if any security threat emerges.
Israel Defense Forces spokesperson Brigadier General Effie Defrin said the military remains prepared to respond immediately to any potential violation by Hezbollah and that there would be no compromise on national security.
Trump also linked the Israel-Hezbollah ceasefire to a recently concluded Memorandum of Understanding between the United States and Iran. He described it as a positive signal for regional peace.
The proposed understanding aims to reduce military tensions in the Middle East and establish new channels for 60 days of technical and diplomatic discussions with Iran. Under the framework, both sides have agreed to work toward a permanent solution and advance future negotiations.
According to sources, the framework also includes issues related to limiting regional military activities, ensuring the security of trade routes, and expanding economic cooperation. It also emphasizes technical-level discussions on Iran’s nuclear program and efforts to strengthen regional stability.
Trump indicated that U.S. Vice President JD Vance could participate in proposed future peace talks with Iran in Switzerland. He also said that Special Envoy Steve Witkoff would continue to be involved in separate diplomatic efforts.
A proposed meeting in Switzerland has been postponed for the time being. Swiss officials said they remain fully prepared for any future multilateral negotiations and are continuing necessary preparations.
Experts believe that the Israel-Hezbollah ceasefire and mediation efforts by the United States, Qatar, and other regional actors could serve as a foundation for a broader peace process in the Middle East. However, security challenges remain, and the success of the ceasefire will depend on the commitment of both sides.
