Tamil Nadu’s political landscape has shifted following the results of the 2026 Assembly elections, with Tamilaga Vetri Kazhagam (TVK) emerging as the single largest party after securing 108 seats in the state assembly. Amid discussions over government formation and possible alliances, the party held a key meeting on Tuesday in Chennai.
During the meeting, TVK chief Vijay was unanimously elected leader of the party’s legislative wing. Senior party leaders endorsed the decision and described it as a reflection of unity within the organisation. According to party sources, Vijay’s leadership is expected to play a central role in decisions related to government formation and future political negotiations.
The meeting also focused on support required to form the government and the issue of securing a majority in the assembly. TVK stated that it would not seek support from other parties through political compromise. The party said any support extended to it should be “natural and based on shared ideology”.

Party leaders said discussions would be held only with parties that share similar political views. They also stated that TVK would conduct politics based on self-respect and principles and would not take decisions under pressure.
At the same time, the party clarified that it was not opposed to coalition politics. TVK stated that parties extending support to it would be given appropriate representation and authority in the government. Senior party leaders have been assigned responsibility for alliance-related discussions and will engage with other political parties.
TVK has also submitted a letter to the Governor staking claim to form the government. In an email sent by the party, TVK stated that as the single largest party in the state, it should be invited to form the government. The party has also sought time to prove its majority in the assembly, with the requested period reported to be around two weeks.
