UGC Issues Warning on Fake Universities Across Multiple States Degrees Declared Invalid

The University Grants Comelhi, Uttar Pradesh, Kerala, Maharashtra, Puducherry, West Bengal and Andhra Pradesh, stating that degrees issued by these institutions are not valid for employment or higher education and advising students to verify recognition status before admission.

The University Grants Commission (UGC) has issued a warning regarding fake universities operating across several states in the country, stating that degrees awarded by these institutions will not be valid. The Commission has advised students to verify the recognition status of universities before seeking admission to safeguard their academic and professional prospects.

The UGC identified multiple fake universities across the country and cautioned students to remain vigilant, particularly in Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Kerala, Maharashtra, Puducherry, West Bengal and Andhra Pradesh. According to the Commission, these institutions are awarding degrees without legal recognition, which are not valid for employment or higher education. The list has been released for students, parents and stakeholders in the education sector to ensure informed decisions prior to admission and to mitigate future risks.

Under the UGC Act, 1956, only institutions established by a central or state government, or those granted the status of ‘deemed to be university’, are authorized to confer degrees. Institutions recognized through a special Act of Parliament are also permitted to award valid degrees.

Despite these provisions, several unauthorized institutions are operating by presenting themselves as universities and attracting students. Students enrolled in such institutions may face difficulties in employment, government examinations and further studies.

According to the UGC list, the highest number of fake universities has been identified in Delhi and Uttar Pradesh. In Delhi, institutions such as All India Institute of Public and Physical Health Sciences, United National University and Vishwakarma Open University are operating without recognition.

In Uttar Pradesh, institutions including Gandhi Hindi Vidyapeeth, Prayag; Bharatiya Shiksha Parishad, Lucknow; and Mahamaya Technical University, Noida, have been included in the list. Several institutions in Kerala, Maharashtra, Puducherry, West Bengal and Andhra Pradesh have also been declared fake.

Students have been advised to verify the recognition status of any university before seeking admission. The official website of the UGC provides a comprehensive list of recognized universities, which can be consulted for confirmation.

Students are also advised to examine the institution’s official recognition status, the Act under which it was established and relevant government approvals. Admission without proper verification may result in loss of time, money and academic progression.
