Unnao: A tense situation arose late Sunday night in Unnao district, Uttar Pradesh, during a procession taken out by members of the Muslim community on the road. The procession was in protest against the registration of an FIR in Kanpur regarding the ‘I Love Mohammed’ poster. Due to provocative sloganeering and stone-pelting during the dispute, the police had to resort to a lathi-charge. Six rioters have been arrested in connection with this incident.
Protest After 'I Love Mohammed' Controversy in UP
The ‘I Love Mohammed’ controversy, which began in Kanpur, has now spread to several districts of UP. In Unnao, members of the Muslim community took to the streets in Shakti Nagar and Manohar Nagar of the city to protest the FIR. Participants in the procession also raised provocative slogans like ‘Sar tan se juda’.
Local residents reported that the procession was taken out at night, leading to a tense atmosphere. Police forces from several stations were deployed to the spot, but the crowd challenged the police team.
Stone-Pelting and Police Lathi-Charge
Youths participating in the procession started pelting stones at the police team, which further escalated the situation. Police immediately established control by resorting to a lathi-charge. SP Jaiprakash Singh stated that six youths involved in stone-pelting have been taken into custody.
Police stated that other individuals are being identified, and raids are ongoing for action against them. Surveillance in the area has been increased to prevent any untoward incidents.
Arrest of Six Youths
Six people were injured in the stone-pelting incident in Manohar Nagar, under the Gangaghat Kotwali police station area. Police reported that all were sent to the hospital for primary treatment. The SP stated that an FIR has been registered against the six arrested youths under serious sections.
Local administration increased security in the area and started police patrols in various parts of the city. Officials stated that vigilance is necessary to control any situation.
Police Appeal for Public to Maintain Peace
Police stated that the situation is being closely monitored to maintain peace and ensure law and order. SP Jaiprakash Singh appealed to the public not to get involved in any dispute and to inform the police.
Police also informed that further action would be taken after arrests and interrogation. The administration has deployed police forces in surrounding areas to prevent any untoward incidents in the future.
