US Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated that the US had a direct role in the India-Pakistan ceasefire. He credited Trump for this. India has already rejected all such claims.
US Claims: The United States is once again in the spotlight regarding the ceasefire on the border between India and Pakistan. In a recent interview, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio claimed that the US had a direct role in the 2021 ceasefire, and that it was made possible by former President Donald Trump. His statement has reignited debate in international politics.
Rubio Called Trump 'President of Peace'
Marco Rubio said in his interview that the Trump administration played a decisive role in reducing tensions between India and Pakistan. Calling Trump the 'President of Peace,' he added that the US made diplomatic efforts to prevent tension between the two nuclear-armed countries. According to him, it was the result of Trump's policy and personal initiative that peace could be established on the border.
Trump Has Claimed Before
This is not the first time that such a claim has been made by the US or the Trump administration. Donald Trump has said many times before that he offered to mediate between India and Pakistan and that the ceasefire was possible due to his efforts.
In 2019, Trump also said in a public statement that he had spoken to Prime Minister Narendra Modi on this issue. However, India had completely rejected this statement at that time as well.
India's Clear Response: Pakistan Made the Request
The Government of India has already denied all these claims. Officially, India says that Pakistan itself took the initiative for the ceasefire. India has repeatedly reiterated that establishing peace on the border has been India's priority, but there has been no mediation by the US or any other country in this.
Ceasefire Agreement: Announcement Made in February 2021
In February 2021, after talks at the DGMO level between India and Pakistan, an agreement was reached to re-implement the ceasefire. Both countries issued a joint statement confirming that they would strictly adhere to the ceasefire on the Line of Control (LoC) and all other sectors. This decision was seen as a positive step by the international community.
Rubio's Elaboration on Trump's Foreign Policy
Marco Rubio not only mentioned the ceasefire between India and Pakistan in the interview, but also highlighted Trump's role in 'establishing peace' in other regions. He said that the Trump administration also worked towards resolving ongoing conflicts between countries such as Cambodia and Thailand, Azerbaijan and Armenia. Along with this, Rubio also mentioned the US role in ending the decades-long conflict between the DRC and Rwanda.
Rubio Also Spoke on the Russia-Ukraine War
Rubio also claimed that if Trump had been in power, the situation like the Russia-Ukraine war would not have arisen. According to him, Trump's foreign policy was based on a balance of diplomacy and pressure, which helped in reducing tensions between many countries.
