US Conducts Strikes Near Strait of Hormuz as Iran Talks Continue Amid Rising Regional Tensions

le site while diplomatic discussions with Iran continued. Officials from both countries signalled ongoing negotiations as regional tensions involving Israel, Lebanon and Hezbollah also intensified.

Tensions in West Asia escalated again amid ongoing ceasefire and diplomatic discussions between the United States and Iran after the U.S. military conducted operations against multiple targets near the Strait of Hormuz on Tuesday. According to reports, U.S. forces targeted boats allegedly attempting to lay naval mines along maritime routes and also struck a surface-to-air missile site near the port of Bandar Abbas.

The U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) described the operation as an act of “self-defense.” Spokesperson Timothy Hawkins said the action was necessary to ensure the safety of U.S. personnel and naval vessels. The United States stated that Iranian activities could pose a threat to international maritime routes and U.S. naval ships.

According to the U.S. position, the Strait of Hormuz is among the world’s most sensitive maritime routes through which a substantial share of global oil supplies passes. U.S. officials said the placement of naval mines in the region could pose risks not only to military vessels but also to commercial shipping.

U.S. officials also stated that Washington was exercising restraint amid the ceasefire environment and was attempting to prevent the situation from escalating into a broader conflict.

The military action has also raised questions about the impact on diplomatic talks between the two countries. Experts said such developments could create temporary disruptions in the negotiation process, although peace efforts do not currently appear to have collapsed.

The U.S. Secretary of State indicated that discussions on an agreement with Iran remain ongoing. During meetings held in Qatar, technical issues including the situation in the Strait of Hormuz, uranium enrichment and sanctions relief were discussed. However, no final agreement has yet been signed.

Former U.S. President Donald Trump reiterated a hardline position on Iran, stating that the United States would not accept any “weak or Obama-style deal” with Tehran. Trump said there would either be a b agreement aligned with U.S. interests or no agreement at all.

Trump also said Iran’s enriched uranium would either be destroyed under international supervision or neutralised under U.S. oversight.

Iran has indicated that it is not prepared to relinquish its uranium enrichment rights under any circumstances. Iranian leaders said nuclear technology is a sovereign right and necessary for national security.

According to Iran’s Foreign Ministry, some progress has been made in negotiations, but a final agreement has not been reached because of what it described as changing U.S. conditions.

International affairs experts said Iran is unlikely to fully retreat under pressure. Former U.S. diplomats stated that Tehran would not compromise on matters linked to its strategic position and national standing.

Experts also said the recent U.S. strikes could serve as a pressure tactic to influence negotiation terms rather than halt talks entirely.

Qatar continues to play a mediating role in the developments. The Qatari government rejected reports claiming Iran had been offered billions of dollars to secure an agreement.

Qatar’s Foreign Ministry said such reports were inaccurate and were being circulated to weaken regional peace efforts.

According to Tehran authorities, repairs to most buildings damaged in recent attacks are nearly complete. Officials said more than 90 percent of buildings that sustained minor damage had been repaired, with remaining work expected to be completed within the next few days.

Amid the broader regional tensions, strains between Israel and Lebanon have also intensified. The Israeli military carried out large-scale airstrikes on multiple Hezbollah positions, according to reports, targeting dozens of weapons storage sites and command posts.

Israel said the action was necessary for security reasons, while reports from Lebanon indicated civilian casualties in the strikes.
