The Government of Uttar Pradesh is encouraging the installation of rooftop solar panels on residential buildings to provide relief from rising electricity bills and promote clean energy. Eligible households may receive subsidies of up to ₹1.08 lakh through combined assistance from the Central and State governments, reducing the initial cost of installing a solar system while enabling long-term savings on electricity bills.

The initiative aims to connect more households with solar energy. After the installation of a rooftop solar system, a substantial portion of a household's daytime electricity requirement can be met through solar power. If the system is connected through net metering and the prescribed conditions are fulfilled, surplus electricity may also be exported to the grid.

In Uttar Pradesh, the total subsidy in several cases is stated to be up to ₹1.08 lakh by combining the subsidy available under the Central Government's PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana with additional assistance provided by the State Government. However, the actual subsidy will depend on the capacity of the installed system, eligibility, and applicable rules.

Energy experts say that rooftop solar systems may serve as a long-term investment for households with higher electricity consumption. Government subsidies available on the initial installation cost reduce the financial burden, and the investment cost may be recovered over time through savings on electricity bills.

Applicants seeking to avail themselves of the scheme should obtain information regarding system capacity, estimated cost, eligibility, and available subsidies from their electricity distribution company and an authorised vendor before submitting an application. For additional information and online applications, the PM Surya Ghar portal and the UPNEDA Solar Rooftop Portal may be used.
