Public feedback is being collected across several districts in Uttar Pradesh ahead of the end of gram panchayat tenures, allowing villagers to directly assess the performance of their elected village heads. Residents are being asked to share their views on local issues, development works and implementation of government welfare schemes.
The feedback process at the panchayat level includes issues such as village roads, drainage, electricity, water supply, sanitation, housing schemes, toilets, pensions and employment. Villagers are being asked how much development has taken place during the outgoing tenure and which problems still remain unresolved.
The initiative has become a subject of discussion in rural areas of Uttar Pradesh, with residents openly discussing the work carried out by their village heads. While some villagers expressed satisfaction with development works, others raised concerns over incomplete projects, damaged roads, waterlogging and sanitation arrangements.
Several villagers said political representatives make multiple promises during elections, but not all are fulfilled. They said collecting public opinion before the end of the tenure could help assess the actual changes made in villages.
Elderly residents and women have also shown interest in the process. Some villagers said their grievances earlier remained confined to official records, but now they are being directly consulted.
Experts said public participation at the panchayat level strengthens democratic processes. They said reviewing development schemes based on public opinion could improve work in rural areas.
In several villages, residents identified drinking water shortages, broken roads and poor drainage as major issues. In some panchayats, villagers said the gram pradhan had carried out road construction, built community facilities and ensured implementation of government schemes in the village.
Panchayat elections in Uttar Pradesh are considered politically important because gram pradhans play a major role in village development. Public feedback collected during the current process could influence the atmosphere ahead of future elections.
Political observers said villagers are now expressing their opinions more openly than before. They attributed this to growing awareness of local issues due to the increasing influence of social media and digital platforms.
The initiative is also aimed at assessing whether the benefits of government schemes reached the intended beneficiaries. In several places, villagers alleged that benefits remained limited to selected individuals, while in some villages residents appreciated transparency and improved working methods.
Photographs and videos of development works in gram panchayats are also being shared on social media platforms. Some gram pradhans are presenting completed works as achievements, while opposition groups are highlighting shortcomings.
Rural youth said more work is needed in areas such as employment opportunities, sports facilities, internet connectivity and education. Women identified safety, healthcare and sanitation as priority issues.
Political experts said such public feedback could bring changes to future panchayat politics by increasing accountability of gram pradhans and improving transparency in development works.
Discussions continue across rural areas of Uttar Pradesh over whether elected gram pradhans were able to address village problems during their tenure. Public opinion gathered in the coming days could play a role in shaping the direction of future panchayat elections.
