Varanasi: On Monday, the PWD initiated a widening campaign in the historic Dalmandi market. In the presence of extensive security arrangements and police force, the administration carried out demolition action on the first building. This campaign is part of a government project aimed at easing access to the Kashi Vishwanath Temple, but this action has sparked a wave of discontent among local traders.

Commencement of Widening Drive in Dalmandi

After long-standing preparations in Varanasi's Dalmandi market, the widening work finally commenced on October 29. The administration's team had barricaded the area since morning to ensure crowd control and prevent any obstruction. In the first phase, one shop out of 187 identified shops was demolished.

The PWD team began removing structures with the help of drilling machines and JCBs. The administration stated that affected property owners had been given prior notice, and the compensation process had also been completed. The entire situation was monitored by drone cameras during the operation.

Increased Security in the Area

Anticipating tension in the high-profile area, the administration had already deployed 150 police personnel and one RAF company. Local officials stated that the campaign is being conducted entirely under legal procedure.

During this time, nearby shops were temporarily closed to prevent any untoward incidents. The Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM) and Circle Officer present at the spot stated that the action would be completed peacefully, and strict measures would be taken against any form of protest.

Traders' Displeasure Over Shop Demolitions

Traders in the Dalmandi market have expressed displeasure over this action. They state that Dalmandi is not just a commercial hub but also a part of Banaras' cultural identity. Some locals alleged that the administration is attempting to erase Varanasi's historical heritage.

However, some traders also acknowledged that a wider road would revitalize business in the future and facilitate easier customer movement. Nevertheless, the demolition of decades-old shops has hurt the sentiments of many families.
