Vasundhara Raje Emerges as Key Figure in Rajasthan BJP Leadership Race

The political scene in Rajasthan, while appearing calm on the surface, is buzzing with activity beneath. Several political figures are awaiting their turn to play their roles, but the spotlight remains firmly fixed on one face—Vasundhara Raje.

Jaipur: Rajasthan's political landscape is currently vibrant with activity. Discussions regarding leadership within the BJP in the state are intensifying, and in the midst of this, former Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje has once again found herself in the political spotlight. Recently, during her visit to Jodhpur, Raje met with the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) chief Mohan Bhagwat, a meeting that lasted approximately 20 minutes. This encounter is being viewed as a signal of her return from political exile.

Political analysts suggest that Vasundhara Raje's role could be decisive in the selection of leadership within the Rajasthan BJP, considering the need for female leadership and her b public support. Last week, Raje stated from a religious platform in Dholpur, “Everyone has an exile in life, but it is not permanent. If exile comes, it will also go.” Similarly, her meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Delhi last month also hinted at her evolving relationships.

Vasundhara's Return to the Sangh and BJP Fold

Political analyst Manish Godha believes that the meeting between Vasundhara and Mohan Bhagwat is significant. He stated, “It was a one-on-one meeting between the two, so it is purely speculative to predict its outcome. However, given the current developments within the BJP, it can be linked to the national president's election and Raje's potential candidacy.

The Sangh chief recently remarked that the RSS does not directly interfere in BJP affairs. They can offer advice, but the party is independent in governing. According to political analysts, while the election of the national president is the BJP's responsibility, the Sangh's veto power and guidance always hold significant importance.

Vasundhara Raje's Political Strength

Vasundhara Raje's political strength and claim are considered robust for several reasons:

  • Strong Public Support and Caste Balance: In Rajasthan, Raje has identified herself as “daughter of Rajputs, daughter-in-law of Jats, and mother-in-law of Gujjars.” This highlights her broad public appeal and caste equilibrium.
  • Experience in Organization and Governance: Raje possesses experience in both the organization and administration of Rajasthan BJP. She led the organization as State President from November 14, 2002, to December 14, 2003, and again from February 2, 2013, to February 12, 2014. Additionally, she has served twice as Chief Minister of Rajasthan and twice as a Union Minister.
  • Need for Female Leadership: The BJP's national organization has not yet had a female president. In 2023, the party passed the Women's Reservation Bill in Parliament, attempting to woo female voters. In this context, Vasundhara Raje is undoubtedly a formidable name for female leadership.
  • Improved Relations with the Sangh: Despite being sidelined for a long time, Raje has strengthened her relationships with the Sangh and central leadership. This demonstrates her political patience and foresight.

Vasundhara's Political Journey

Vasundhara Raje has an extremely rich political experience.

  • 1985: First elected to the Rajasthan Legislative Assembly from Dholpur.
  • 1989-1999: Member of Parliament for Jhalawar constituency for five consecutive terms.
  • Jhalrapatan constituency: MLA four times.
  • 1998–1999: Minister of State for External Affairs.
  • 1999–2003: Minister for Small Industries, Administrative Reforms, Public Grievances, Atomic Energy, Space, and Planning.
  • 2003: Became the Chief Minister of Rajasthan for the first time; Rajasthan's first female CM.
  • 2013–2018: Chief Minister for the second time.

There are several contenders for leadership within the Rajasthan BJP. At such a time, Vasundhara Raje's meeting with the Sangh chief has intensified political speculation. Analysts believe that Raje's b public support, her experience in both organization and governance, the need for female leadership, and her improved relations with the Sangh could secure her a significant role within the BJP.
