Zelensky Sees 'Better' US Peace Plan Amidst Ongoing War and Renewed Diplomatic Push

Ukrainian President Zelensky hails a 'better' US peace plan, sparking new hopes for an end to the conflict. However, ongoing fighting and attacks mean the Russia-Ukraine war's future remains highly uncertain.

After amendments to the US peace plan, Ukrainian President Zelensky called it ‘better.’ However, the ongoing fighting in Donbas and attacks on Russian oil infrastructure mean the future of the war remains uncertain.

Russia Ukraine War: Four years into the war between Ukraine and Russia, hopes for peace talks have rekindled in Paris. Following a meeting with French President Emmanuel Macron, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky stated that the amendments being made to the American peace plan now appear ‘‘better.’’ He also mentioned that improvements to the plan could increase the possibility of ending the war. Zelensky's visit to Paris comes at a time when fighting in the Donbas region and attacks on Russian oil infrastructure continue, keeping the war situation uncertain.

Improvements to the US Peace Plan

Zelensky stated that improvements are now being made to US President Donald Trump's 28-point peace plan. Trump has now described the plan as merely a ‘‘concept’’ that will be further refined. The plan had drawn criticism because it placed greater emphasis on Russia's demands, which could have limited Ukraine's military, halted its NATO membership, and forced it to cede some territories. Efforts to address these points are ongoing in discussions between US and European officials.

Crucial Meeting Between Russian and US Envoys

Meanwhile, Russian President Vladimir Putin is scheduled to meet with US envoy Steve Witkoff on Tuesday. Questions about Witkoff's role arose when it was reported that he had suggested to Putin's advisor ways to persuade Trump on the American peace plan. This meeting is considered important for the direction of the war and future peace negotiations.

Escalating Dispute Over War Control

Late Monday night, the Kremlin claimed that Russia had captured the city of Pokrovsk in the Donetsk region. However, Zelensky stated that fighting continues there. He said that control over Ukrainian territories is the most complex issue. French President Macron noted that discussions are still in their early stages but could prove to be a crucial turning point for security in Europe and peace in Ukraine.

Russia claimed that Ukraine had attacked its oil infrastructure and stated it had shot down 32 Ukrainian drones. Meanwhile, a Russian missile attack in the city of Dnipro killed four people and injured 40. Ukraine reported that Russia launched thousands of drones and missiles in November. These incidents clearly indicate that tensions on the battlefield remain high, and despite the peace process, security threats have not diminished.
