Indian nurse Nimisha Priya sentenced to death in Yemen for murder; Indian government assures assistance.

Nimisha Priya: The Supreme Court of Yemen has sentenced Indian nurse Nimisha Priya to death in the murder case of Yemeni citizen Talal Abdo Mahdi. Following this, the Indian government has taken steps to assist Nimisha.

Government of India's Response

The Indian government informed the Lok Sabha that the case is now with the President of Yemen, but no action has been taken on the plea for clemency. The Ministry of External Affairs stated on Tuesday that it is considering all relevant options regarding Nimisha Priya's sentence and is providing all possible assistance.

Who is Nimisha Priya?

Nimisha Priya, a resident of Palakkad district in Kerala, went to Yemen as a nurse in 2012. In 2015, she partnered with Talal Abdo Mahdi to establish a clinic in Yemen. Their relationship soured when Talal fraudulently claimed to be a shareholder and Nimisha's husband in the clinic. During this dispute, Talal allegedly physically and sexually abused Nimisha.

The Murder Case

Frustrated by Talal's harassment, Nimisha allegedly administered a drug-laced injection to him in July 2017, leading to his death. Nimisha maintains that her intention was not to kill Talal, but to retrieve her passport. Despite this claim, a lower court in Yemen found her guilty and sentenced her to death, a sentence upheld by the Supreme Court.

Nimisha's Mother's Efforts

Nimisha's mother, Premkumar, has made every effort to save her daughter in Yemen. She is prepared to travel to Yemen and offer blood money to secure her daughter's pardon.

Indian Government's Support

The Indian government has taken the case seriously, and the Ministry of External Affairs has stated that the government is providing all possible assistance. The government is in contact with Nimisha's family and is exploring relevant options.
