Fruit-laden Truck Plunges into Gorge on NH-63 in Yellapur, Karnataka; 10 Dead, 15 Injured

Karnataka: A major road accident occurred this morning in Yellapur, Uttara Kannada district, Karnataka. A fruit-laden truck veered off NH-63 and plunged into a gorge, resulting in the death of 10 people and injuries to 15 others.

Fruit Truck Falls into Gorge

According to sources, the accident happened around 5:30 AM. The truck was carrying over 30 vegetable vendors traveling from Savanur to Kumta market. The driver lost control while attempting to avoid another vehicle, causing the truck to swerve to the left and fall approximately 50 meters down a gorge. Eight people died at the scene, while 10 sustained serious injuries.

Injured Taken to Hospital

The injured were immediately rushed to a nearby hospital. The condition of some is reported to be critical. According to Superintendent of Police Narayan M, all the deceased and injured are being identified as vegetable vendors who were heading to market to sell their produce.

Rescue Operation Underway

Emergency response teams arrived at the scene immediately and initiated rescue operations. While initially reported as eight, the death toll has now risen to ten. Officials are inspecting the truck and the road infrastructure to investigate the cause of the accident.

Authorities Investigate the Accident

Following the accident, authorities have begun investigating both the truck and the condition of the road. The accident occurred near Yellapur on National Highway 63, between Arabail and Gullapura. Officials state that a thorough understanding of the cause of the accident will only be possible after a complete investigation.
