Maharashtra is abuzz with demands to relocate Aurangzeb's tomb located in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar. The state's Chief Minister, Devendra Fadnavis, has commented on the matter, stating that while the demand enjoys widespread support, any action will be undertaken strictly within the confines of the law.
Mumbai: The controversy surrounding Mughal emperor Aurangzeb in Maharashtra's politics shows no signs of abating. The debate has now centered on calls to remove Aurangzeb's tomb from Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar. Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has responded to the issue, stating that a significant portion of the state's population believes the tomb should be relocated, but this will be done legally. He further clarified that the government will follow constitutional and legal procedures.
Demand from Chhatrapati Shivaji's Descendant
BJP MP and descendant of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, Udayanraje Bhosale, recently demanded the removal of the tomb. Responding, Chief Minister Fadnavis stated, “We all agree on this issue, but action will be taken through legal processes. This site was previously under the supervision of the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) during the Congress government's tenure.”
The Genesis of the Controversy
The controversy erupted after Maharashtra Samajwadi Party leader and MLA Abu Azmi made controversial remarks praising Aurangzeb. He claimed Aurangzeb built many temples and was a just ruler. This statement ignited Maharashtra's political landscape, with the BJP and other organizations vehemently protesting.
Action Against Abu Azmi
A case was filed against Abu Azmi for his remarks, and he was suspended from the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly until March 26th. However, following mounting protests, he retracted his statement, saying, “If my comments have caused anyone harm, I withdraw them.” Political analysts believe this issue could become even more complex in the coming days.
The state government faces a significant decision, as numerous organizations are protesting the demand for the removal of Aurangzeb's tomb. Conversely, the opposition party is strategizing to corner the BJP government.
