Tamil Nadu Governor and Stalin Government Impasse Resolved by Supreme Court

Tamil Nadu: The long-standing standoff between Tamil Nadu Governor R.N. Ravi and the Stalin government has been resolved by a landmark Supreme Court decision. The Supreme Court deemed 10 bills passed by the state legislature as law, bypassing the Governor's assent.

This historic decision comes after the Governor withheld assent despite the bills being passed twice by the state assembly. This marks the first instance where bills have been considered law without the Governor's or President's assent in any Indian state.

Supreme Court's Landmark Order

The Supreme Court, hearing a bench comprising Justices S.B. Pardiwala and R. Mahadevan, ordered that the bills be deemed approved from the date they were re-introduced in the Assembly. The Court noted that since the Governor had not assented to the bills initially, and they were re-presented, they could not be reserved for the President's consideration.

Supreme Court's Remarks on the Governor's Stance

Earlier, the Supreme Court criticized the Governor's actions, questioning why it took him three years to identify issues with the bills. The Court raised concerns about the Governor's handling of the matter. The impasse between the Tamil Nadu government and the Governor had been ongoing, stalling various legislative processes due to the Governor's refusal to grant assent.

List of Bills and Significant Amendments

Among the 10 bills now enacted, a key one amends the rules for appointing Vice-Chancellors of state-run universities. Other bills incorporated significant social and educational reforms in Tamil Nadu. The passage of these bills provides substantial relief to the state government, which considers it a significant victory for Indian states.

State Government Expresses Gratitude to the Supreme Court

The Tamil Nadu government hailed the Supreme Court's decision as historic, alleging that the Governor's actions deliberately delayed development. Following the verdict, the state government expressed its gratitude to the Supreme Court, terming it a victory for the people of Tamil Nadu.
