When US Vice President JD Vance emphasized the importance of diplomacy in resolving the Russo-Ukrainian war, Zelensky directly questioned him about why Russia was not stopped during the annexation of Crimea in 2014.

Zelensky asked Vance, "Putin seized Crimea and significant parts of Ukraine in 2014. This situation persisted under Obama, Trump, and Biden—all three administrations. Now President Trump says he will stop Russia, but why wasn't he stopped in 2014?"
Vance responded, "I'm talking about the diplomacy that will prevent your country's destruction."
