Pakistan Hockey Team Misses Azlan Shah Cup Due to Unpaid Debts
Last Updated: 12 hour ago

The Pakistan Hockey Federation (PHF) is once again facing challenges in participating in international tournaments due to a financial crisis. Recently, the PHF decided to withdraw its team from the prestigious Azlan Shah Cup held in Malaysia.

Hockey: The Pakistan Hockey Federation (PHF) suffered another major setback when it did not receive an invitation to the prestigious Azlan Shah Cup, hosted by Malaysia. The reason cited is the failure to settle outstanding payments, further damaging Pakistan's reputation. The Johor Hockey Association alleges that the PHF owes $10,349 (approximately ₹8.83 lakh), expenses incurred during a Malaysian tour in October 2023. Due to this issue, the Malaysian Hockey Federation did not invite Pakistan to participate in the tournament.

Outstanding Payments and Delayed Settlements

Unpaid expenses include travel and accommodation costs for Pakistani officials and their families during the Malaysian tour. According to a source, the PHF initially left the responsibility of covering these expenses to the organizers, but the organizers later clarified that the PHF was responsible for settling these costs.

These expenses included stays in luxury hotels and travel costs for PHF officials. The source mentioned that these expenses included those of a former PHF president who travelled with the team.

Johor Association's Stern Warning

The Johor Hockey Association raised this matter with the Malaysian Hockey Federation and stated that if the outstanding amount is not paid, they will take the matter to the International Hockey Federation (FIH). In this context, the Johor Association issued a stern warning to Pakistan, indicating b action would be taken if the payment is not made promptly.

A source also indicated that the current PHF president and his team are distressed by this situation, as they were unaware of these expenses incurred by former officials.

Financial Constraints and Problems

This incident adds to the PHF's woes, as the federation is already grappling with a financial crisis. A lack of funds for the sport's structure and development has become a serious issue. The financial constraints have made it difficult for the Pakistan hockey team to participate in international tournaments. The threat from the Johor Hockey Association and the Malaysian Hockey Federation's actions have further weakened the PHF's position.

Significance of the Azlan Shah Cup

The Sultan Azlan Shah Cup, scheduled for November 22-29 in Ipoh, Malaysia, represents a significant opportunity for Pakistan. Top hockey teams from around the world participate in this tournament, providing a crucial platform for Pakistan. Participation allows the team to showcase its abilities and maintain its international reputation. However, due to the outstanding payments, Pakistan has missed this opportunity.

Similar Issues in Cricket

This is not the first time Pakistan has faced such setbacks in sports. Previously, Pakistan encountered similar financial crises in cricket. In the 2023 Asia Cup, the PCB (Pakistan Cricket Board) failed to pay the Sri Lanka Cricket Board, leading to a dispute.

Furthermore, the Pakistan cricket team's performance has been disappointing in recent years. The team was eliminated in the early rounds of major tournaments like the 2023 ODI World Cup, 2024 T20 World Cup, and 2025 Champions Trophy.

The Pakistan Hockey Federation needs to take steps to improve its financial situation to overcome this crisis. This requires securing funds and formulating a robust plan for hockey at the international level. Failure to do so could lead to even greater challenges for Pakistan in the future.
