The Importance of Gold Purity and Hallmark
Checking the purity of gold is crucial when buying jewelry. 22-carat gold contains 91.6% pure gold, but it is sometimes adulterated and sold as 89% or 90% pure. Therefore, it is essential to check the hallmark before purchasing gold. Hallmark certification guarantees the purity of gold. For example, a 916 hallmark indicates 91.6% purity, while a 999 hallmark indicates 99.9% pure gold.
How to Check the Hallmark?
Each carat has a different hallmark. 24-carat gold is marked 999, 23-carat is 958, 22-carat is 916, 21-carat is 875, and 18-carat is 750. To calculate the purity of gold, divide the carat number by 24 and multiply by 100. For example, the purity of 22-carat gold is (22/24) × 100 = 91.6%.
