Holika Dahan is celebrated annually on Phalgun Purnima, but the story behind it is shrouded in mystery. Why was a goddess deemed a demoness, and how did she perish in the flames? Let's delve into this mythological tale.

Holika: The Story of a Goddess Turned Demoness
Ancient texts suggest that Holika was initially a goddess, but due to a sage's curse, she was reborn as a demoness. It is believed that in a previous life, Holika was a divine woman who insulted a sage. As punishment for this transgression, the sage cursed her to be born into a demonic lineage. This is why she was born as Hiranyakashipu's sister and came to be known as a demoness.
The Tale of Hiranyakashipu and Prahlad
Hiranyakashipu, the demon king, was a staunch opponent of Lord Vishnu. He forbade the worship of Vishnu in his kingdom, but his son, Prahlad, proved to be a devout follower of Vishnu. Hiranyakashipu could not tolerate this and made numerous attempts to kill Prahlad.
Holika's Boon and Demise
Holika possessed a boon that rendered her immune to fire. Hiranyakashipu planned to use this boon to eliminate Prahlad. He instructed his sister to sit in a fire with Prahlad in her lap. However, due to divine grace, Prahlad remained unharmed, while Holika was consumed by the flames.
The Significance of Holika Puja
Although Holika is referred to as a demoness, she is also worshipped. It is believed that by burning in the fire, she was absolved of her past sins. This is why the tradition of worshipping her on Holika Dahan continues.
Holika Dahan is not merely a tradition; it conveys the message that no matter how powerful evil may be, it cannot withstand truth and devotion. This festival reminds us that the end of wickedness is inevitable and truth always triumphs.
