What is Shab-e-Barat Night?

What do Muslims do on Shab-e-Barat night?
On Shab-e-Barat, members of the Muslim community participate in special religious activities. After the Maghrib prayer, they visit the graves of their ancestors and offer prayers for their forgiveness. They clean the graves, offer flowers, and light incense. This is a special tradition of showing respect for ancestors and praying for them.
On the night of Shab-e-Barat, people stay awake throughout the night worshipping Allah in mosques or homes. They offer prayers, recite the Quran, and seek forgiveness for their sins. Some people also observe Nawafil (optional) fasts on this night. Usually, this is for two days—the first on Shab-e-Barat and the second on the following day. However, this fast is not obligatory but considered voluntary.
The greatest significance of this night lies in repentance and self-purification. People seek forgiveness from Allah for their sins and resolve not to commit wrongdoings. Charity is also given to the needy. On this occasion, sweet dishes like seviyan and halwa are prepared in homes, symbolizing the sharing of happiness among family and society.
