Nag Panchami 2025: Auspicious Date, Significance, and Rituals

According to the Vedic Panchang, Nag Panchami will be celebrated on Tuesday, July 29, 2025. The festival of Nag Panchami is celebrated every year on the Panchami Tithi of Shukla Paksha in the month of Sawan. This day is known for the special worship of Nag Devta (Serpent God) and Lord Shiva. It is religiously believed that worshiping snakes on this day removes all crises from life and brings happiness and prosperity.

Special Significance of Worshipping Shiva and Nag Devta

Nag Devta is mentioned in Shiv Purana and other religious texts. Vasuki Nag is seated around the neck of Lord Shiva, which indicates that snakes have an inseparable relationship with Shiva. That is why Nagas are also worshiped along with the Shiva family on the day of Nag Panchami. On this day, devotees offer milk, Belpatra (Aegle marmelos leaves), flowers, Dhatura (thorn apple), and water on the Shivling. Along with this, they make an idol of Nag Devta from clay or silver and perform special worship.

Best Day for the Remedy of Kaal Sarp Dosh

According to astrology, people who have Kaal Sarp Dosh in their horoscope are advised to perform special worship on the day of Nag Panchami. It is believed that the effect of Kaal Sarp Dosh is reduced by devotion to Lord Shiva and Nag Devta on this day. Reciting Nag Stotra and Shiva Raksha Stotra on this day opens the way for peace and progress in life.

Recite Nag Stotra on Nag Panchami

Reciting "Nag Stotra" especially on the day of Nag Panchami is considered very fruitful. This Stotra is dedicated to the Nagas dear to Lord Shiva. In this, Nagas residing in Brahmaloka, Vishnuloka, Rudraloka, and various places of the earth are saluted. Recitation of this Stotra gives devotees freedom from fear, disease, crisis, and Kaal Sarp Dosh.

ब्रह्म लोके च ये सर्पाः शेष नागाः पुरोगमाः।
नमोऽस्तु तेभ्यः सुप्रीताः प्रसन्नाः सन्तु मे सदा॥

विष्णु लोके च ये सर्पाः वासुकि प्रमुखाश्च ये।
नमोऽस्तु तेभ्यः सुप्रीताः प्रसन्नाः सन्तु मे सदा॥

रुद्र लोके च ये सर्पाः तक्षकः प्रमुखास्तथा।
नमोऽस्तु तेभ्यः सुप्रीताः प्रसन्नाः सन्तु मे सदा॥

खाण्डवस्य तथा दाहे स्वर्गञ्च ये च समाश्रिताः।
नमोऽस्तु तेभ्यः सुप्रीताः प्रसन्नाः सन्तु मे सदा॥

सर्प सत्रे च ये सर्पाः अस्थिकेनाभि रक्षिताः।

प्रलये चैव ये सर्पाः कार्कोट प्रमुखाश्च ये।

ग्रामे वा यदि वारण्ये ये सर्पाः प्रचरन्ति च।

Spiritual Power will Increase with Shiva Raksha Stotra

By reciting Shiva Raksha Stotra on the day of Nag Panchami, one not only receives the blessings of Shiva but also gets protection from unseen forces. This Stotra is a prayer to Shiva's various forms, in which prayers are offered to protect his limbs.

चरितं देवदेवस्य महादेवस्य पावनम्।
अपारं परमोदारं चतुर्वर्गस्य साधनम्॥

गंगाधरः शिरः पातु भालं अर्धेन्दुशेखरः।
नयने मदनध्वंसी कर्णो सर्पविभूषण॥

जिह्वां वागीश्वरः पातु कंधरां शितिकंधरः।
श्रीकण्ठः पातु मे कण्ठं स्कन्धौ विश्वधुरन्धरः॥

हृदयं शंकरः पातु जठरं गिरिजापतिः।
नाभिं मृत्युञ्जयः पातु कटी व्याघ्राजिनाम्बरः॥

सक्थिनी पातु दीनार्तशरणागतवत्सलः।
उरू महेश्वरः पातु जानुनी जगदीश्वरः॥

चरणौ करुणासिंधुः सर्वाङ्गानि सदाशिवः।
एतां शिवबलोपेतां रक्षां यः सुकृती पठेत्।
स भुक्त्वा सकलान्कामान् शिवसायुज्यमाप्नुयात्॥

Worship Nag Devta with Traditional Methods

While worshiping on Nag Panchami, make an idol of Nag Devta from clay and worship it with milk, Akshat (rice), Kusha (grass), Durva (Bermuda grass), and sandalwood. The worship place is purified with Gangajal (Ganges water), and after worshiping with the Panchopchar method, Nag Stotra and Shiv Raksha Stotra are recited.

This Day also has Special Significance in Folk Traditions

In rural areas, the festival of Nag Panchami is also associated with folk traditions. In many places, on this day, people make a figure of a snake on the walls of the house and worship it. Women observe fast and pray to Nag Devta for happiness of children, peace and happiness in married life, and welfare of the family.
