Pitru Paksha 2025 Begins: Pratipada Shraddh Observed for Ancestors

The Pitru Paksha 2025 began on September 7th, and the first Pratipada Shraddh is being observed on Monday, September 8th. On this day, Shraddh is performed for ancestors who passed away on the Pratipada Tithi (first day) of either the Krishna (waning) or Shukla (waxing) Paksha (fortnight) in any month. Devotees can receive the blessings of their ancestors by performing Pind Daan, Tarpan, and other religious rituals at home or with the assistance of a priest.

Method for Performing Shraddh at Home

To perform Shraddh at home without a priest, first, take a bath in the morning and sprinkle Gangajal after cleaning the house. Sit facing the South and place Gangajal, milk, rice, sesame seeds, barley, and white flowers in a copper vessel. Add Kush grass to it and offer water towards the South with your hand, remembering your ancestors. Perform Pind Daan in the name of the ancestors, which involves making a pind (ball) with barley, rice, sesame seeds, and milk and offering it while chanting the mantra “Om Pitrubhyah Namah”. Afterward, offer food to a Brahmin, perform Panchbali (offering to cow, crow, dog, ants, and peepal tree), and complete the Shraddh ceremony by giving charity and dakshina according to your capacity.
