M.A. Baby Elected General Secretary of CPI(M)

Former Minister M.A. Baby has been elected as the new General Secretary of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) (CPI(M)) at its 24th Congress held in Kerala. The position had been vacant since the passing of Sitaram Yechury on September 12th of last year.

Kerala: During the CPI(M)'s 24th Congress on Sunday in Kerala, former Minister M.A. Baby was elected General Secretary. This position became vacant following the death of Sitaram Yechury. Amidst much speculation, M.A. Baby, a Politburo member and veteran leader, was chosen for this crucial role.

M.A. Baby's Political Journey

M.A. Baby has been a member of the Politburo since 2012 and is recognized as a prominent leader within the CPI(M)'s organizational structure. However, Ashok Dhawale, President of the All India Kisan Sabha (AIKS), also received support for the position. This is because the CPI(M) is striving to strengthen its hold in rural areas, and agricultural issues remain prominent.

Support from All India Kisan Sabha President

M.A. Baby's political journey began during his school days when he joined the Kerala Students Union. Born in Perumbavoor, Kerala, in 1954, he also served as a Member of Parliament (Rajya Sabha) from 1986 to 1998.

The post of Party General Secretary had been vacant since the demise of Sitaram Yechury, with Prakash Karat serving as interim coordinator. The 24th CPI(M) Party Congress commenced on April 2nd and concluded on Sunday.
