Controversy Erupts in Parliament Over Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan's Use of 'Uncivil' Term. DMK MP Kanimozhi Files Breach of Privilege Notice.
Delhi: A major controversy has erupted in Parliament over a statement made by Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan. DMK MP Kanimozhi Karunanidhi has filed a breach of privilege notice against Pradhan. The controversy began after Pradhan referred to Tamil Nadu MPs as "uncivil."
Kanimozhi's Protest
Expressing her displeasure over Pradhan's statement, Kanimozhi termed it offensive and unparliamentary. She stated that such words are unacceptable for elected representatives and should not be used in Parliament. She also characterized the remark as disrespectful towards Tamil Nadu's leaders and Chief Minister.
Disagreement Over Three-Language Policy
The DMK has long opposed the three-language policy, which mandates the teaching of Hindi. Tamil Nadu traditionally follows a two-language policy (Tamil and English). Kanimozhi alleged that the central government is attempting to impose Hindi on South Indian states, potentially threatening local languages and culture.
Issue of Disparity Between Southern and Northern States
Kanimozhi also raised the issue of developmental disparity between southern and northern states. She stated that while southern states adhere to population control measures, their political representation is likely to decrease due to the delimitation policy. She demanded a clear policy from the central government, highlighting the alleged injustice faced by southern states in development and resource allocation.
Concerns Over Delimitation
The DMK MP also expressed concern over delimitation (redistribution of Lok Sabha seats). She argued that this process could disadvantage southern states while granting more seats to populous northern states. She demanded a detailed discussion on this matter with the central government.
Tamil Nadu's Education Policy
Kanimozhi praised Tamil Nadu's education system, highlighting the state's higher GDP and the presence of its citizens in high positions abroad. She questioned the central government's rationale for forcefully including Hindi in the curriculum when the state's education system is so effective.
DMK's Stance Clarified
The DMK clarified that they are not opposed to Hindi or any other language, but they will not accept interference in states' rights. Kanimozhi asserted that language is a state subject and the central government should not interfere. She demanded a comprehensive discussion on this issue in Parliament.
