The DMK government in Tamil Nadu, led by Chief Minister M.K. Stalin, has passed a resolution opposing the central government's Wakf (Amendment) Bill, 2024.

Chennai: The Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly on Thursday passed a resolution against the Wakf Amendment Bill proposed by the central government. Chief Minister M.K. Stalin introduced the resolution, alleging that the bill could hurt the sentiments of the Muslim community. BJP MLA Vanathi Srinivasan opposed the resolution, while the opposition AIADMK accused Chief Minister Stalin of playing vote-bank politics.

CM Stalin Targets Central Government

Chief Minister M.K. Stalin stated in the assembly, "An attempt is being made to curtail the powers of the Wakf Board, hurting the sentiments of the Muslim community. This bill is against the religious freedom guaranteed by the Constitution. The Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly urges the central government to immediately withdraw this bill."

Strong Opposition from BJP and AIADMK

BJP MLA Vanathi Srinivasan opposed the resolution, stating that the bill aims to ensure transparency and accountability. She said, "This bill will improve the management of Wakf properties, but the DMK government is misrepresenting it." Meanwhile, AIADMK national spokesperson Kovai Satyan criticized the DMK, stating, "This resolution is solely for political gain and to create religious polarization. If there is an issue, the judicial process should be used, not political maneuvering through such resolutions in the Assembly."

Wakf (Amendment) Bill 2024: What's the Controversy?

The Wakf (Amendment) Bill 2024 was introduced by the central government to amend the Wakf Act of 1995. The government claims the bill will streamline the registration of Wakf properties and ensure transparency. It proposes managing Wakf properties through a central portal and database. Further, it mandates providing notice to concerned parties before declaring any property as Wakf and following procedures under revenue laws.

Political analysts believe the resolution passed by the DMK government could be a calculated strategy ahead of the upcoming Lok Sabha elections. Muslim voters are a significant group in Tamil Nadu, and the DMK may be trying to strengthen its position with this resolution. Conversely, the BJP considers this resolution a mere political stunt, arguing the bill aims to prevent misuse of Wakf properties and make administration more accountable.
