A heated argument between TMC MPs at the Election Commission on April 4th, 2025, was caught on video and subsequently went viral, shared by the BJP, prompting a clarification and counter-allegations from MP Kalyan Banerjee.
New Delhi: A heated argument between two Trinamool Congress (TMC) Lok Sabha MPs at the Election Commission (EC) office has escalated into a political controversy. The altercation occurred while the MPs were submitting a memorandum to the EC. The incident gained further traction after a video of the event was shared on social media by Amit Malviya, the head of the Bharatiya Janata Party's (BJP) IT cell.
BJP Shares Video Clips - TMC MP Kalyan Banerjee
Amit Malviya shared a video clip on social media showing TMC MP Kalyan Banerjee raising his voice at a female MP. In the video, Banerjee can be heard stating that he neither secured his seat through quota nor joined the TMC from another party.
Banerjee defended himself, explaining that he had been instructed by TMC MP Derek O'Brien to obtain signatures from 27 MPs on a memorandum. Upon arriving at the EC office, a female MP allegedly shouted at him, accusing him of deliberately omitting her name from the list. The female MP also reportedly asked the BSF personnel present to "arrest" him.
Controversy Spreads to WhatsApp Group
Amit Malviya claimed the argument extended beyond the EC office. The controversy continued within a TMC WhatsApp group, 'AITC MP 2024,' where two factions of MPs engaged in a war of accusations. He also publicly released screenshots of this chat.
BJP's Accusations
Malviya criticized the TMC, alleging that internal factionalism and discontent within the party had become public. He accused the party of sending MPs to the Election Commission, causing dissatisfaction among some MPs and escalating the situation.
