Waqf Bill: The Waqf Amendment Bill was passed in the Lok Sabha despite b opposition from the opposition. It will be presented in the Rajya Sabha today, April 3rd. The bill received 288 votes in favor, while 232 MPs voted against it. Meanwhile, Congress President Sonia Gandhi launched a scathing attack on the central government.
Sonia Gandhi's Statement – "A Shameless Assault on the Constitution"
Addressing the Congress Parliamentary Party (CPP) meeting, Sonia Gandhi stated that the Waqf Amendment Bill, 2024, was passed forcefully. She alleged that the bill is aimed at communal polarization and is part of a deliberate BJP strategy. Gandhi termed it a direct attack on the Constitution.
Parliamentary Uproar, Government Responds
Presenting the bill in the Lok Sabha, Minister of Parliamentary Affairs Kiren Rijiju said the opposition is trying to mislead the public. He insisted that "no law can be above another law" and that the government is only making justifiable amendments.
Muslim Personal Law Board Opposes the Bill
The All India Muslim Personal Law Board (AIMPLB) has bly objected to the Waqf Amendment Bill. The board stated that the bill will prove detrimental to Waqf properties instead of protecting them. Muslim organizations have described it as a direct interference in the community's rights.
