Although they lost to India in the final in Barbados, finishing as runners-up, his coaching tenure also saw the 50-over team reach the semi-finals of the 2023 Men's Cricket World Cup in India.
During Walter's time as coach, the team played 36 ODIs and 31 T20 matches. South Africa secured series wins against the Netherlands, Australia, Ireland, and Pakistan. His last international assignment was the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy, where South Africa reached the semi-finals.
