Counting Underway in Tirhut Graduates Constituency as Independent Candidate Banshidhar Brajwasi Leads

Counting of votes in the Bihar Legislative Council election for the Tirhut Graduates Constituency in Muzaffarpur has seen independent candidate Banshidhar Brajwasi take the lead, putting him ahead of JD(U) candidate Abhishek Jha in the initial trends. RJD-backed candidate Dr Rashmi Vinayak Gautam is also among the leading contenders. The margin between candidates has changed across counting rounds, keeping the contest closely fought. Attention is now focused on the remaining counting rounds and second-preference votes, which could prove decisive if no candidate secures the required number of votes through first-preference counting.

In the first round, Banshidhar Brajwasi received 2,813 votes, while JD(U)'s Abhishek Jha secured 1,739 votes to occupy second place. RJD-backed Dr Rashmi Vinayak Gautam received 1,407 votes. Brajwasi led Jha by 1,074 votes after the first round. However, the margin changed in subsequent rounds as Jha sought to improve his position. As counting progressed, the importance of completing all stages of the process for determining the final result became evident.

Brajwasi remained in the lead after the sixth round, but his margin had narrowed to 235 votes. At this stage, Brajwasi received 2,327 votes, while Abhishek Jha secured 2,092 votes. In the fifth round, Brajwasi had held a lead of 535 votes. The changing margins brought the contest closer, making it inappropriate to predict the final outcome solely on the basis of the initial lead. The position remains subject to the completion of the official counting process.

The preference-based counting system is also a key aspect of the Tirhut Graduates Constituency election. Under this system, voters can rank candidates by first preference and then by subsequent preferences. If no candidate secures the required number of votes to win through first-preference counting, votes assigned to subsequent preferences are counted in accordance with the applicable rules. Candidates with fewer votes may be eliminated successively, with ballot papers transferred to the remaining candidates according to the next valid preference recorded on them and the prescribed counting rules. Consequently, a candidate leading on first-preference votes is not necessarily assured of retaining that lead until the final result.

Brajwasi's lead has brought the role of an independent candidate into focus in the election. Political attention is also on the votes secured by JD(U) candidate Abhishek Jha and the changing margin between the two candidates. The votes received by RJD-backed Dr Rashmi Vinayak Gautam also remain an important part of the count. The subsequent counting rounds and the calculation of second-preference votes will determine the direction of the final result. Voters and candidates are awaiting the official announcement.
