New Delhi: The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, on Wednesday approved the construction of a 4-lane Greenfield Access Controlled Corridor for the Mokama-Munger section of the Buxar-Bhagalpur High-Speed Corridor in Bihar on a Hybrid Annuity Mode (HAM). This project, spanning a total length of 82.4 km and costing Rs 4,447.38 crore, will connect Bhagalpur by passing through important cities like Mokama, Barahiya, Lakhisarai, Jamalpur, and Munger. With a design speed of 100 km/h and an average speed of 80 km/h, this project will reduce travel time by approximately 1.5 hours and ensure fast, safe, and seamless connectivity for passenger and freight vehicles.
Cities Connected by the Mokama-Munger Section
The proposed 4-lane highway will pass through major cities such as Mokama, Barahiya, Lakhisarai, Jamalpur, and Munger. This section also connects to Bhagalpur and will strengthen the region's connectivity. The proposed corridor will offer a fast, safe, and seamless travel experience for passengers and freight vehicles. The design speed of this highway will be 100 kilometers per hour, while the average vehicle speed is estimated to be 80 kilometers per hour. This will reduce the total travel time by approximately one and a half hours.
Development in Munger-Jamalpur-Bhagalpur Region
The Munger-Jamalpur-Bhagalpur region of Eastern Bihar is rapidly emerging as a major industrial hub. Ordnance factories, locomotive workshops in Jamalpur, ITC food processing in Munger, and related logistics and warehousing centers are being developed in this area. Bhagalpur is emerging as a textile and logistics hub due to its famous Bhagalpuri silk. Barahiya is rapidly developing for food packaging, processing, and agro-warehousing.
Due to increasing economic activities in this region, a significant increase in traffic and freight movement is expected on the Mokama-Munger section in the future. The proposed highway will accelerate regional development by directly connecting local businesses and industries.
Employment Generation and Economic Benefits
This 82.40-kilometer-long project is estimated to generate approximately 14.83 lakh man-days of direct employment and 18.46 lakh man-days of indirect employment. The construction and operation of the highway will create employment opportunities for local people and boost economic activities in the surrounding areas. Upon completion of this project, there will also be a reduction in the time and cost of road transportation.
