CMPDI shares list at discount on NSE and BSE despite grey market premium signals

CMPDI sharee of 10.71 crore shares worth Rs 1,842.12 crore, saw overall subscription of 1.05 times, with stronger participation from institutional investors compared to retail and non-institutional segments.

CMPDI shares listed at a discount on March 30, diverging from pre-listing grey market indications. The stock debuted below its issue price, disappointing investors expecting listing gains.

The shares of Central Mine Planning and Design Institute opened weakly on both major exchanges. On BSE, the stock listed at Rs 162.80, approximately 5.35 percent below the issue price of Rs 172. On NSE, it opened at Rs 160, reflecting a discount of about 6.98 percent to the issue price.

The listing performance indicated limited investor participation in the IPO and demand falling short of expectations.

Pre-listing grey market premium estimates did not translate into actual market performance. CMPDI shares were trading around Rs 177 in the grey market ahead of listing, implying a potential listing gain of 2 to 3 percent over the issue price. However, the stock listed at a discount, highlighting the inherent uncertainty associated with grey market indicators.

The IPO was entirely structured as an Offer for Sale, with no fresh equity issuance. A total of 10.71 crore shares were offered, aggregating to approximately Rs 1,842.12 crore. The price band for the issue was set at Rs 163 to Rs 172 per share, with a lot size of 80 shares. The issue remained open from March 20 to March 24, 2026, and allotment was finalised on March 25.

The subscription response to the IPO remained moderate, with the issue subscribed 1.05 times overall. Qualified Institutional Buyers subscribed 3.48 times their allotted portion, while Non-Institutional Investors subscribed 27 percent and Retail Investors subscribed 33 percent of their respective quotas.

The IPO being entirely an Offer for Sale implies that the company will not receive any proceeds from the issue. The funds raised will accrue to the promoter shareholders after deducting issue-related expenses and taxes.

Kfin Technologies was appointed as the registrar to the issue. IDBI Capital Markets & Securities and SBI Capital Markets acted as the book running lead managers, overseeing the IPO process including applications, allotment, and listing.

The subdued listing is attributable to multiple factors, including modest subscription levels indicating limited demand. The absence of fresh capital infusion due to the OFS structure may have also influenced investor participation. Broader weakness in global markets and a declining trend in domestic markets may have additionally impacted the listing outcome.
