Cold Wave Grips Prayagraj: Bovine Deaths and Illnesses Surge in Cow Shelters

A sudden cold snap in Prayagraj has caused several bovines to die and hundreds to fall ill in district cow shelters. Concerns rise over inadequate facilities amidst the severe weather.

Prayagraj: The biting cold in Prayagraj district is also showing its impact on cow shelters. Due to a sudden drop in temperature last night, many bovines in several shelters fell victim to the cold. According to administrative figures, several cattle have died so far, while hundreds are reported to be ill.

According to sources, approximately 35,000 bovines are housed in more than 130 cow shelters in the district, while a large number of stray animals are still living outside shelters. Complaints have emerged that adequate arrangements for their safety and care during the cold are lacking.

Locally, it is being reported that many shelters lacked adequate provisions to protect against the cold during the night. A shortage of tarpaulins, warm bedding, and proper sheds was found in several cow shelters. The sudden increase in cold weather most severely affected weak and sick animals.

The administration has deployed veterinary teams to treat sick and weak bovines. Officials have issued directives to ensure essential facilities in all cow shelters. Meanwhile, local residents state that the actual situation is more severe than government claims, and a clear lack of care is evident in many locations.

During the current cold spell, it is hoped that the district administration will take concrete steps for the safety and health of bovines residing in shelters, to prevent the recurrence of such incidents.
