Following the declaration of the 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly election results, the Congress party has decided to extend support to TVK after the party emerged as the single largest formation in the state.
According to sources, the decision was taken unanimously during an emergency meeting of the Tamil Nadu Political Affairs Committee held late Tuesday night. The meeting was conducted online and was attended by several senior Congress leaders from Delhi.
The development comes after TVK secured 108 seats in the 234-member Tamil Nadu Assembly, falling short of the majority mark of 118 by 10 seats.
Congress, which has five MLAs in the Assembly, decided to back TVK chief Vijay in support of government formation efforts. Other smaller parties, including PMK with four MLAs and CPI and CPI(M) with two MLAs each, are also expected to play a role in the emerging political alignment.
Congress said the people of Tamil Nadu had voted in favour of a “secular and stable government.” The party also stated that it wanted to prevent the Bharatiya Janata Party and its allies from coming to power in the state under any circumstances.
Party leaders said the decision to support TVK was based on both political and ideological considerations.
Following the election results, TVK chief Vijay formally appealed to Congress and other parties for support. Contesting Assembly elections for the first time, TVK won 108 seats and emerged as the largest party in the state.

Sources said TVK is expected to begin the formal government formation process soon. A meeting of the party’s legislators is likely to be held to elect the legislative party leader and stake claim to form the government.
The election outcome has significantly altered the political landscape of Tamil Nadu, where power has traditionally alternated between DMK and AIADMK for several decades.
In the latest results, DMK secured 59 seats, while AIADMK won 47 seats, leaving both parties outside the race to form the government.
Political analysts said the emergence of TVK as the largest party represents the rise of a new political alternative in the state.
The new political arrangement in Tamil Nadu is also expected to have implications at the national level. Congress’ support for TVK is being viewed as part of a broader opposition strategy aimed at countering the BJP’s influence in states.
Political experts said that if the alliance remains stable, it could form the basis of a ber regional and national opposition platform ahead of the 2029 Lok Sabha elections.
Meanwhile, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee said during a press conference in Kolkata that she would not resign from the post of Chief Minister. She stated that her government had been affected not by a loss of mandate but by a conspiracy.
In Assam and Puducherry, the NDA returned to power, while Congress gained ground in Kerala. The results across these states have led to new political equations in Indian politics.
