Counting Begins for Maharashtra Municipal Corporation Election Results 2026

Today marks a key day in Maharashtra’s urban political calendar as results of the 2026 municipal corporation elections are scheduled to be declared across the state.

Counting of votes for elections to 29 municipal corporations began at 10 am, according to the State Election Commission. Votes are being counted for 2,869 seats spread across 893 wards. Particular attention is focused on the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation, where elections have been held for the first time since 2017. Results from Mumbai, along with those from Pune, Thane, Navi Mumbai and Pimpri-Chinchwad, are being closely watched.

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation contest has drawn wide attention as it is regarded as the country’s wealthiest municipal body. With polls conducted after a gap of several years, the outcome is being followed not only across Maharashtra but also at the national and international levels. Victory in the BMC is widely seen as decisive for control of urban governance in the state.

According to the State Election Commission, counting is under way across all 893 wards. Results from major and economically significant cities, including Mumbai, Pune, Thane, Navi Mumbai and Pimpri-Chinchwad, are expected to indicate future political directions for contesting parties.

The municipal elections have featured several key political alignments. The Bharatiya Janata Party and the Shiv Sena led by Chief Minister Eknath Shinde contested most municipal corporations together under the Mahayuti alliance. However, in Pune, the two parties contested separately after failing to reach a seat-sharing agreement.

The Shiv Sena led by Uddhav Thackeray and the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena led by Raj Thackeray contested together on the issue of ‘Marathi Manus’. The two leaders appeared on the same political platform after nearly two decades, and the results are expected to indicate the future course of this cooperation.

The two factions of the Nationalist Congress Party, led by Sharad Pawar and Ajit Pawar respectively, contested under a mutual understanding in Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad to avoid division of votes.

In Pune, the Shiv Sena led by Eknath Shinde contested independently due to the absence of a seat-sharing agreement with the BJP, highlighting internal dynamics within the Mahayuti alliance. Results from cities such as Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad, known as major IT and education hubs, are expected to reflect urban voter preferences.

Results are being declared today for municipal corporations including Mumbai, Pune, Thane, Navi Mumbai, Pimpri-Chinchwad, Vasai-Virar, Kalyan-Dombivli, Mira-Bhayandar, Ulhasnagar, Nagpur, Nashik, Solapur, Amravati, Akola, Latur, Dhule, Jalgaon, Malegaon, Kolhapur, Sangli-Miraj-Kupwad, Nanded-Waghala, Chandrapur, Parbhani, Jalna, Panvel, Bhiwandi-Nizampur, Ahilyanagar and Ichalkaranji.
