Delhi Court Dismisses Plea Against Sonia Gandhi Over Voter List Inclusion

Former Congress President Sonia Gandhi has received significant relief from the Rouse Avenue Court in Delhi. The court has dismissed a petition alleging that her name was included in the voter list before obtaining citizenship, and demanding a case be registered and an investigation be conducted.

New Delhi: Former Congress President Sonia Gandhi has received significant relief from the Rouse Avenue Court in Delhi. The court has dismissed a petition alleging that her name was included in the voter list before obtaining citizenship. Prior to this, the petitioner had alleged that Sonia Gandhi acquired Indian citizenship on April 30, 1983, while her name was already included in the 1980 voter list.

Main Allegations Raised in the Petition

The petition claimed that Sonia Gandhi got her name included in the New Delhi voter list in 1980, whereas she only obtained citizenship in 1983. The petitioner questioned the legality of including a name in the voter list without citizenship. The petition also alleged that Sonia Gandhi's name was deleted from the voter list in 1982, and asked what documents were used to add her name to the 1980 voter list after she obtained citizenship in 1983. The petitioner also expressed suspicion that forged documents might have been used.

The petition had sought directions for the Delhi Police to register a case, investigate the matter, and submit a status report to the court. The petitioner argued that if her name was included in the voter list without citizenship, it would be a legal and constitutional violation.

Rouse Avenue Court's Decision

However, the court dismissed the petition, granting major relief to Sonia Gandhi. The court deemed the petitioner's claims baseless and described them as inconsistent and contrary to facts. This clarifies that there is no legal issue with Sonia Gandhi's voter ID controversy. These allegations against Sonia Gandhi have been raised by the opposition and on social media for several years. The accusation was that she obtained a voter ID before acquiring citizenship, which could be considered improper according to election procedures and law.
