The Government of Delhi has approved changes to the names of certain existing and proposed metro stations in the national capital following the expansion of the metro network. The decision was taken under the leadership of Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, who also serves as Chairperson of the State Naming Authority.
According to the Chief Minister, a review was conducted of 21 station names proposed in the Detailed Project Report submitted by the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation. After detailed deliberations, it was decided to retain 12 names as originally proposed, introduce partial modifications to seven names, and completely change the names of two stations.
Rekha Gupta stated that metro stations are not merely centres of transportation but also reflect the historical, social and cultural identity of the areas they serve. She said each proposal was examined carefully to ensure that local sentiments and heritage are respected.
Review of Proposed Station Names
The State Naming Authority reviewed 21 station names included in the Detailed Project Report of the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation. Following deliberations, 12 names were retained without change, seven were partially revised to clarify local identity, and two were fully renamed.
Basis for Name Changes
The State Naming Authority stated that multiple factors were considered while finalising the names. These included the local and geographical identity of the area, historical and cultural significance, suggestions received from local public representatives and residents, and passenger convenience in terms of clear wayfinding.
