Understanding gold purity is important when purchasing jewellery. 24-carat gold is considered the highest-purity category and is primarily used for coins and gold bars.
22-carat gold contains approximately 91.6% pure gold, while the remaining portion consists of other metals that provide additional strength. This is why 22-carat gold is widely used in jewellery manufacturing.
18-carat gold contains 75% pure gold and is also used to manufacture jewellery in different designs.
Gold prices generally vary according to purity, with higher-purity gold usually commanding a higher price.
The gold rate displayed at a jewellery store may differ from the final bill. Apart from the price of gold, buyers also have to pay making charges and GST.
Customers should therefore request a detailed breakdown of the final bill before purchasing jewellery. Checking the gold's purity and hallmark certification is also important.
