At least 307 lion deaths have been recorded in Gujarat over the past two years, with 41 of these lives lost due to unnatural causes. Forest Minister Mulubhai Bera informed the assembly that 141 lions died between August 2023 and July 2024, while 166 lions died between August 2024 and July 2025. The majority of these deaths occurred due to falling into wells and reservoirs, along with other causes such as road accidents, being run over by trains, electric shocks, and natural disasters.
The government has implemented several significant measures to ensure the safety of lions. These include providing an ambulance service for timely treatment in forests, establishing wildlife treatment centers, and appointing veterinarians. Government Takes Concrete Steps to Save Lions
The Forest Minister stated that to enhance lion protection, speed breakers and signboards have been installed on roads passing through sanctuary areas. Additionally, walls have been constructed near open wells in forest areas, and fences have been erected on both sides of railway tracks. These measures aim to reduce accidental encounters and ensure the safety of lions.
The government has also intensified monitoring of lion movements through regular forest patrols and the use of radio collars. This allows for better control over the lion population and their security within wildlife sanctuaries.
