Himachal Pradesh: The monsoon has wreaked havoc in Himachal Pradesh. Continuous heavy rainfall has led to landslides, waterlogging, and flood-like situations in many districts. Across the state, 533 roads, 635 transformers, and 266 drinking water schemes are closed. Public life has been severely affected in districts such as Mandi, Solan, Kangra, and Kullu. The Meteorological Department has issued a yellow alert until August 12. The administration is on alert mode, and surveillance has been increased in sensitive areas. So far, 199 deaths, 36 missing persons, and destruction of property worth crores have been confirmed due to the disaster.
Roads Closed Due to Waterlogging and Landslides
In the last 24 hours, heavy rainfall in Himachal Pradesh has completely disrupted public life. Due to heavy rainfall in districts like Shimla, Solan, Mandi, Chamba, Kangra, and Bilaspur, situations of landslides and waterlogging have arisen in many places. The highest rainfall of 150 mm was recorded in Kasauli, Solan, while rainfall between 60 and 120 mm was recorded in other areas. The Meteorological Department has issued a yellow alert for the state until August 12 and has appealed to citizens to remain vigilant.
Heavy Impact on Electricity and Water Supply
Due to continuous rainfall, 533 roads have been closed throughout the state, including 4 National Highways. In Mandi alone, 314, Kullu 117, Shimla 26 and Kangra 23 routes are obstructed. Major routes like NH-3, NH-21, NH-305, and NH-5 have also been affected.
Along with this, the electricity and water supply systems have also been greatly affected. 304 transformers in Solan, 285 in Mandi, and 41 in Shimla are non-functional. Among drinking water schemes, 88 in Mandi, 120 in Kangra, and 27 schemes in Hamirpur have been disrupted.
Heavy Losses in Rural Areas
In the Kutli village of Kullu district, many houses and vehicles have been damaged due to the floods. In the Mochka Nala of Nirman sub-division, a flash flood washed away an old bridge, cutting off contact with the area. The Disaster Management Department has increased surveillance at 21 sensitive landslide sites in Mandi, Kangra, Shimla, and Solan districts.
In these areas, there is a continuous threat of landslides in areas like Parashar, Kotropi, Griffin Peak, Dharamshala, Jatog, and Dagshai, where the administration is monitoring vigilantly. People have been advised to avoid unnecessary travel in such areas.
Thousands of Houses-Shops Damaged
During the monsoon active since June 20 in the state, 199 people have lost their lives in rain-related incidents so far. 36 people are missing and 304 people have been injured. The highest number of deaths, 42, has occurred in Mandi district alone.
According to the Disaster Management Department report, 1786 houses have been damaged, out of which 367 have been completely destroyed. 298 shops and 1690 cowsheds have also been affected. In Mandi alone, 1118 houses and 267 shops have been found damaged.
The total loss so far has been estimated at more than ₹1905 crore. The Public Works Department has suffered a loss of ₹1009 crore and the Jal Shakti Department has suffered a loss of ₹648 crore. So far, 58 flash floods, 28 cloudbursts, and 51 landslides have been recorded in the state.
