ICC Test Rankings: Harry Brook Dethrones Joe Root, Shubman Gill Soars, and Mulder Makes a Mark

The ongoing five-match Test series between India and England (IND vs ENG Test 2025) is proving to be incredibly exciting for cricket fans.

Sports News: The International Cricket Council (ICC) has released the latest Test and ODI rankings, creating a stir among cricket fans. England's explosive batsman, Harry Brook, has surpassed his compatriot Joe Root to claim the number-1 Test batsman title. Meanwhile, Shubman Gill's double century and outstanding form have earned him his career-best ranking. Players from India, England, Sri Lanka, and South Africa have made significant jumps in both Test and ODI formats.

Harry Brook dethrones Joe Root to claim the No. 1 spot

Harry Brook, who played a brilliant innings of 158 runs in the Edgbaston Test between England and India, has been richly rewarded for this performance. Brook is now the number-1 batsman in the ICC Test rankings. He has overtaken former number-1 Joe Root, who is now in second place. Brook is currently 18 rating points ahead of Root. This is a major achievement for English cricket, as it's been a long time since a young player has been able to challenge Root's dominance.

Shubman Gill's historic leap

Indian captain Shubman Gill has created history by scoring 269 and 161 runs in the Edgbaston Test. Gill has now jumped 15 places to reach the sixth position, which is his highest ranking in his Test career. Gill's consistency and composure in batting are now putting him among the top batsmen in world Test cricket. England's Jamie Smith has also jumped 16 places in this ranking and secured the 10th position.

Wiaan Mulder's triple impact

South African all-rounder Wiaan Mulder shook up the rankings by scoring an unbeaten 367 runs against Zimbabwe. With this performance, he:

  • Jumped 34 places to reach the 22nd position in the batsmen's list.
  • Climbed 12 places to reach third position in the all-rounder rankings.

Mulder's innings is being considered one of the biggest individual innings to date, and he has established himself as the backbone of South Africa's Test team.

Jasprit Bumrah's dominance in bowlers' rankings continues

Although Jasprit Bumrah was not part of the Edgbaston Test, his number-1 position remains. His accurate line and length and consistency have kept him at the top of the bowling rankings. Meanwhile, Mohammed Siraj has jumped 6 places and now occupies the 22nd position. West Indies' Shamar Joseph and Alzarri Joseph have also jumped 6 places each and reached the 29th and 31st positions respectively.
