The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a warning of heavy rainfall, b winds and lightning across several parts of the country on June 23. According to the department, weather conditions may change rapidly over the next 24 hours in several states across northern, eastern and central India.
The forecast indicates that wind speeds may reach 70 to 80 kilometres per hour in some areas. People have been advised to remain alert and avoid unnecessary travel.
The IMD has forecast heavy rainfall and thunderstorms in Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand, West Bengal, Rajasthan, Punjab, Haryana, Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Odisha and Kerala. The department said eastern Indian states face a higher risk of lightning strikes and b winds. Farmers, fishermen and people working in open areas have been advised to take additional precautions.
Rainfall is expected to bring relief from prolonged heat in the National Capital Region. However, b winds and possible waterlogging may affect traffic movement. According to the IMD, Delhi may experience moderate to heavy rainfall accompanied by winds of up to 70 kilometres per hour. A fall in temperature is also expected.
Warnings of heavy rainfall and storms have been issued for several districts in Bihar. The IMD estimates that rainfall activity may be more intense in the northern and eastern parts of the state. In Jharkhand, heavy rainfall and b winds are expected in several districts. Local administrations in Ranchi, Dhanbad, Bokaro and nearby areas have been directed to remain alert.
Heavy rainfall in the mountainous regions of Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh and Jammu and Kashmir may lead to landslides and road blockages. Weather experts have advised tourists and travellers to check weather updates before undertaking journeys. Local administrations are maintaining monitoring measures due to the possibility of rising water levels in rivers and streams.
Several districts in Rajasthan are likely to receive rainfall accompanied by b winds. Weather conditions may change suddenly in Jaipur, Ajmer, Kota, Udaipur and other areas. Monsoon activity is also expected to intensify in Madhya Pradesh, with rainfall and thunderstorms likely to affect central and eastern parts of the state.
The IMD has advised farmers to take necessary measures to protect crops and exercise caution while working in open fields. Fishermen living in coastal and marine areas have been warned against venturing into the sea during adverse weather conditions. Strong winds may also lead to fallen trees, disruptions in power supply and impacts on transport services.
