China India Boundary Meeting: The recent visit of Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi to India is considered quite important. Wang Yi was in India on August 18 and 19. During this time, he also met with Indian Foreign Minister S. Jaishankar, National Security Advisor Ajit Doval, and Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
The biggest objective of his India visit was to further the discussions on the India-China border dispute. During this visit, the 24th round of talks at the Special Representative level took place. In this, both sides had in-depth discussions to reduce tensions on the border, increase peace, and resolve the dispute.
Satisfaction Expressed on Stability at the Border
In the meeting, Wang Yi said that significant progress has been made since the meeting of representatives of both countries in Kazan. He appreciated the fact that peace and stability have been maintained in the India-China border areas since the 23rd round of talks. Both India and China acknowledged that maintaining stability on the border is essential for the overall relations between the two countries.
Commitment to Maintaining Peace on the Border
The representatives of India and China agreed that maintaining peace and stability in the border areas should be a priority. Both acknowledged that bilateral relations should be viewed from a political perspective and that a just, rational, and mutually acceptable framework should be sought to resolve the border dispute.
Agreement to Open Three Trade Markets
The biggest outcome of this dialogue was that both sides agreed to reopen three Traditional Boundary Trade Markets. The opening of these long-closed trade routes will provide relief to the people living on both sides of the border and trade activities can accelerate again.
Expert Group to be Formed on Demarcation
India and China have decided that an expert group will be formed under the framework of the WMCC (Working Mechanism for Consultation and Coordination on India-China Border Affairs). This group will explore the possibilities of demarcation in areas where conditions are favorable.
This step regarding demarcation is considered extremely important for the future because this process can lead to a permanent solution to the border dispute.
New Working Group for Border Management and Control
It was also agreed in the talks that a new working group will be formed under the WMCC. This group will strengthen effective management and control on the border so that there is no possibility of any kind of conflict and peace is maintained.
Talks to be Held in the Eastern and Middle Sectors as Well
Until now, general-level talks on the border have mostly been limited to the Western Sector. But this time, both sides agreed that such talks should also be started in the Eastern and Middle sectors. A new round of General Level Talks will also be held in the Western Sector soon.
Diplomatic and Military Channels to be Active
Both countries agreed that diplomatic and military channels will be actively used for the border management and control mechanism. This means that now the dialogue will not be limited to the leaders but contact will also be maintained at the military level so that the tension situation can be handled on the spot.
Cooperation on Cross-Border Rivers
The issue of cross-border rivers was also discussed in the talks. Both countries decided that the existing agreement on sharing information related to rivers will be renewed.
The Chinese side agreed to share emergency water-related information with India on a humanitarian basis. This will directly benefit in dealing with flood-like situations.
Next Round of Talks in 2026
It was also agreed between India and China that the 25th round of this dialogue will be held in China in 2026. This scheduled program reflects the intention of both countries that the process of resolving the border dispute through dialogue will continue continuously.
