A passport serves as a crucial document for international travel and as an identification of being an Indian national. The Government of India has launched the Passport Seva Program V2.0. Under this program, the e-passport system has now been implemented across the entire country.
E Passport India: The Government of India has introduced significant changes in passport services and has implemented the e-passport system nationwide by launching the Passport Seva Program V2.0. From now on, only chip-enabled e-passports will be issued for new passport applications and renewals in the country. This initiative aims to enhance passport security and expedite the immigration process.
For international travel, a passport is considered one of the most important documents and a primary identification for Indian citizens. Under the new system, passports have become more secure and high-tech.
Validity of Old Passports
Many people wonder if their old passport will now become invalid. The answer is—no.
- If your passport is currently valid, you can continue to use it as before.
- A new chip-enabled e-passport will only be issued once your current passport's validity expires.
New passport applicants also do not need to fill out a separate new form or select any special option. This step by the government has been taken to further enhance passport security and accelerate the immigration process.
What is an E-Passport?
An e-passport features a small golden chip embedded in its cover, which contains an RFID chip. This chip securely stores the passport holder's biometric and personal information. A chip-enabled passport will make the immigration process much faster and simpler during international travel. The e-passport aligns with global standards and has been prepared in accordance with the security requirements of ICAO (International Civil Aviation Organization). The government's objective is to further strengthen the identification and security of Indian citizens through e-passports.

PSP V2.0 and Global Passport Seva Program
Under the Passport Seva Program V2.0 (PSP V2.0) and the Global Passport Seva Program, all passports issued and renewed from now on will be in the form of e-passports.
- The upgrade will automatically apply when applying for a new passport.
- Old passport holders will also receive a new e-passport upon the expiration of their current one.
- The new e-passports will not only enhance security but also reduce immigration time during international travel.
The government has made this change to ensure that passports are more secure and equipped with modern technology.
Benefits of E-Passports
- Enhanced Security – The passport holder's personal and biometric information is securely stored in the chip.
- Faster Immigration Process – Expedited processing at borders.
- Global Standards – E-passports comply with international security standards.
- Automatic Upgrade – New applicants do not need to follow a separate process.
This step by the Government of India marks a significant change towards ensuring secure and faster passport services for its citizens. Old passports will remain valid, but in due course, all new and renewed passports will be issued as chip-enabled e-passports.
