India follows constitutionally distinct procedures for hoisting the national flag on January 26 and August 15. On Republic Day, the President unfurls a flag that is already tied at the top of the pole, while on Independence Day, the Prime Minister hoists the flag by raising it from the bottom, reflecting different historical meanings.
On January 26, Republic Day is observed at Kartavya Path, where the President performs the flag unfurling ceremony. The national flag is already secured at the top of the pole and is released by pulling the rope. This procedure, known as flag unfurling, symbolises that India was already independent and formally became a republic with the implementation of the Constitution.
Under constitutional convention, the President leads the Republic Day ceremony as the constitutional head and first citizen of India. The main event at Kartavya Path includes the official parade showcasing the country’s military capabilities and cultural diversity.

On August 15, Independence Day is observed from the Red Fort, where the Prime Minister hoists the national flag by raising it from the bottom of the pole. This process, known as flag hoisting or dhwajarohan, represents India’s emergence as an independent nation after a prolonged period of colonial rule.
The Prime Minister leads the Independence Day ceremony because the Constitution had not yet come into force at the time of independence, and the Prime Minister was the political head of the country. The Prime Minister addresses the nation from the Red Fort on this day.
The two national events also differ in venue and constitutional symbolism. Independence Day celebrations are held at the Red Fort, a historical symbol of India’s freedom struggle, while Republic Day ceremonies take place at Kartavya Path, representing India’s sovereignty and democratic framework after the Constitution came into effect.
While the national flag represents national pride on both occasions, the procedures, leadership, and locations underscore the distinct constitutional significance of January 26 and August 15.
