Indian markets may open lower as Gift Nifty signals weak start amid global cues and earnings

Indian equity marues and ongoing fourth-quarter earnings announcements remain key drivers. Sectoral activity is likely in renewable energy, metals, mining, and summer-driven consumption segments, with multiple major companies scheduled to report results.

Indian equity markets are expected to open marginally lower amid mixed global cues and ongoing corporate earnings announcements, with indications of potential stability and gradual gains during the trading session. Early signals from Gift Nifty suggest a cautious start.

Gift Nifty was trading 73 points, or 0.30%, lower at 24,020 around 7:15 am, indicating a subdued opening for domestic equities. Market participants, however, expect gradual support during the session, supported by expectations of easing geopolitical tensions and positive cues from international markets alongside sector- and company-specific developments.

Stocks in the renewable energy, metal, and mining sectors are expected to remain in focus. Seasonal demand linked to summer conditions is also likely to influence companies engaged in air conditioners, fans, cold beverages, packaged water, and electrical equipment.

Market Direction Indicates Potential Recovery After Initial Pressure

Despite a weak opening, market participants expect support from global cues, sectoral performance, and potential easing of geopolitical tensions. Investor attention is likely to remain on sectors demonstrating visible demand and growth trends. Activity is expected in renewable energy, metal, and mining sectors, while summer-driven demand could support companies in cooling appliances, beverages, packaged water, and electrical equipment.

Global markets are providing mixed but broadly supportive signals. US indices, including the S&P 500 and Nasdaq, recorded modest gains, although investor caution persists. Key developments scheduled this week include corporate earnings announcements, economic data releases, and a potential interest rate decision by the Federal Reserve.

Asian markets also showed signs of strength, with gains recorded in Topix, while Hang Seng futures indicated marginal weakness. A slight softening in crude oil prices is viewed as supportive for equity markets.

Quarterly Earnings Remain Key Market Trigger

Several companies are scheduled to announce their fourth-quarter results, which are expected to influence market direction. These include Maruti Suzuki India, Bandhan Bank, Castrol India, CEAT, Dalmia Bharat, and Piramal Pharma. Companies across infrastructure, finance, and healthcare sectors are also scheduled to report earnings, potentially driving sector-specific movements.

Recent earnings and developments have placed several companies on investor radar. Coal India reported growth in both profit and revenue. Phoenix Mills recorded a notable increase in profit. Punjab & Sind Bank reported higher profit, while net interest income declined. Adani Total Gas reported stable growth. AU Small Finance Bank and Bajaj Housing Finance reported b financial performance.

Corporate activity remains active, with RailTel Corporation of India securing a significant order, which may influence its stock movement. Meanwhile, Samvardhana Motherson International has decided to acquire a strategic stake in a Japanese company, marking a step in its global expansion strategy.
