Indian Navy Commissions INS Anjadip, Third Shallow-Water Anti-Submarine Warfare Ship, on 27 February 2026

The Indian Navy commissioned INS Anjadip on Friday, 27 February 2026, at Chennai port, adding a third anti-submarine warfare ship to a series of eight vessels designed for operations in shallow waters.

The vessel was formally commissioned by Navy Chief Admiral Dinesh Kumar Tripathi during a ceremony held at Chennai port.

Third Vessel in Eight-Ship Series

INS Anjadip is the third ship in a series of eight anti-submarine warfare vessels capable of operating in shallow waters. The ship has been indigenously designed and constructed by Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers (GRSE), Kolkata.

Designed for Anti-Submarine and Coastal Operations

INS Anjadip has been designed to enhance the Indian Navy’s anti-submarine warfare capabilities and coastal surveillance. The vessel is specifically configured to detect, track and destroy enemy submarines in coastal areas.

The ship is equipped with advanced anti-submarine warfare systems, lightweight torpedoes and indigenous anti-submarine rockets. It also features a shallow-water-operating sonar system to detect and neutralise underwater threats.

Technical Specifications and Operational Roles

INS Anjadip is approximately 77 metres long and is fitted with a high-speed water-jet propulsion system. The vessel has a maximum speed of 25 knots, enabling rapid response and sustained operations.

According to naval officials, the ship is suitable for the following missions:

Anti-submarine warfare operations
Coastal surveillance and security
Low-intensity maritime operations
Support for search and rescue missions
Sea mine laying capability

Navy Chief Admiral Tripathi said the vessel will play an important role in ensuring national security and maritime dominance.

The ship’s design, technical features and indigenous construction reflect the capability and self-reliance of the Indian maritime defence industry.
